According to investigators:

  • Novak and Anna were lured on October 2 to a “meeting with investors” at a villa near a mountain resort in the Hatta region outside Dubai.
  • The couple were driven by their personal driver, transferred to another vehicle, and then disappeared. Their mobile-phone signals were last traced to Hatta, then Oman and later Cape Town, South Africa, before going offline.
  • The kidnappers demanded access to Novak’s crypto wallet. When they realised it held no accessible funds, they allegedly killed the pair, dismembered their bodies and disposed of remains in desert locations around the UAE and in some trash receptacles.
  • Eight suspects—all Russian nationals—have reportedly been arrested in connection with the case, including a former Russian Interior Ministry employee.
  • Novak had a prior fraud conviction and had flaunted a lavish lifestyle on social media: luxury cars, private jets and high-profile gatherings.
  • The investigation is being led by UAE and Russian authorities, with extradition discussions underway.

  • The case raises questions about investor vulnerability, extradition and cross-border enforcement in digital-asset fraud.
  • It also highlights the interplay between perceived wealth, ostentatious living, and criminal retaliation when the promise of access to funds turns into violence.
