The New York Giants have fired defensive coordinator Shane Bowen after the latest in a string of defensive collapses this season. The move comes under interim head coach Mike Kafka, following the dismissal of former head coach Brian Daboll just weeks ago.

The Giants, now sitting at a 2-10 record, are the first team this season eliminated from playoff contention. A key factor: they’ve blown five double-digit leads, including three in consecutive weeks — a staggering figure that ties an NFL record.
Despite offseason investments in the defense — including free-agent signings and high draft picks — the unit has been a major liability. The team is ranked near the bottom in points allowed and worst in the league in rushing defense.

Bowen was brought into the role ahead of the 2024 season with hopes of stabilising the defense. But his conservative scheme and the team’s inability to close out games ultimately sealed his fate.
As of now, no permanent replacement has been announced. Reports suggest outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen may be next in line.
