ICE Calls New York City a “Revolving Door” for Criminal Undocumented Immigrants

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has publicly condemned New York City, labeling it a “revolving door” for criminal undocumented immigrants. The agency claims that sanctuary‑city policies, bail reform, and a lack of cooperation from local officials are allowing individuals with serious criminal records to be repeatedly released back into the community.

ICE highlighted a recent case involving an undocumented migrant from Senegal who was arrested for selling counterfeit goods on Canal Street. According to ICE, this individual had been previously arrested for felony trademark counterfeiting — but was released by city authorities rather than transferred to federal custody, despite a detainer request.

In its statement, ICE argued that NYC’s refusal to honor detainers is undermining public safety, enabling individuals with prior criminal convictions to remain at large. The agency said that local practices are thwarting its ability to protect U.S. citizens and enforce immigration laws effectively.

ICE also pointed to systemic issues, blaming the city’s liberal criminal justice policies and sanctuary‑state approach for the repeated releases. The agency vowed to continue its enforcement operations, targeting those it deems “egregious criminal alien offenders” in the interest of public safety.
